How much Liability Insurance does a builder need?
There is no magic formula to calculate this, especially for builders. It depends on what size projects you work on and the type of work you do. The minimum level of public liability insurance is £1million. Given that as a builder you work in difficult conditions at all time of year and with a range of materials, we suggest a higher level than this.
If a decorator drops a brush off a ladder, the chance of lethal injury is pretty slim! If a builder drops a block the results could be a bit worse. If wallpaper unpeels and crashes to the floor, anyone in the way will probably walk away from the incident and it can be put up again fairly quickly. If an old supported wall collapses whilst under reconstruction, it’s a lot more dangerous and hard to fix.
Flippant as this may sound, the fact is that someone on the news recently who slipped in a shop was suing for £1.5million and we all know worse things than that can happen on a building site.
