Workplace deaths at 35 year low
Posted on November 16th 2009
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have revealed that the number of deaths at work fell to an all time low last year. The figure dropped to its lowest figure since 1974 at 180 deaths, compared to 233 in 2008. Other figures revealed that the number of workplace injuries and sickness where down by 4.6 million days across the UK, which equates to an average of 1.2 working days per worker.
While these figures may be uplifting they are slightly flawed, as the figure does not take into account the number of unemployed in the UK. Although history does tell us that as we start to move back into economic stability the number of workplace accidents will rise.
The number of workplace deaths and injuries may be low but this is still an unacceptable figure and needs improving. A spokesman for the British Safety Council said: "The downward trend will be of little consolation to the relatives and friends of the 180 people killed at work last year, creating a safer working environment for colleagues needs real commitment."
