Worker lucky to escape death after near fatal fall
Posted on April 12th 2010
A Waste Management company from Stourbridge has been found guilty of breaching regulation 5 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted the company when a worker fell 3 meters after a guardrail gave way causing serious injuries. AB Waste Management Ltd was fined £12,000 and ordered to pay £1,836 in costs after pleading guilty at Walsall & Aldridge Magistrates Court.
The court heard how the worker was only on his second day of work when he was cleaning a crushing machine. While leaning on the guard rail it gave way causing him to fall 3 meters breaking his back in 2 places and causing injuries to his head that needed skin graphs. The worker was in this case very lucky not to fall into the crushing machine, as it could have been fatal if he had done so.
