Work place accident causes employee to loose an eye
Posted on November 24th 2008
A man who worked for the councils maintenance department had his cornea ripped out when he hit his eye on an exposed piece of metal.
The injuries to the man were investigated. It is believed that the man's safety goggles fell off after as there was no band in place. When the man bent down he knocked his eye on a rubber handle which had worn away leaving an exposed piece of metal sticking out on a concrete mixer.
Despite intensive surgery and treatment the injured man still lost his eye. He has had to re adjust to life with only one working eye.
The GMB have said that the council should have had the appropriate risk assessments in place to avoid such injuries to their staff. The plasterer was awarded £32000 in compensation.
