Unaware workers struck by asbestos killer

The risks of asbestos are widely known throughout the construction industry today. However in the early days of asbestos usage many were workers unaware of the risks caused by the fine fibres and are now experiencing deadly lung related diseases.

An assistant scientist who worked at the Sellafield Capenhurst site worked with asbestos early in his career sawing through fibre sheets. The worker now 73 described his working conditions and how he used to get so covered with dust that he would have to change his overalls throughout the working day.

Sellafield admitted that in the early days, the company did not take much notice of asbestos as the dangers of the material were little known. However towards the end of the career of their former worker, they became more aware of the ill health effects caused by asbestos fibres.

The worker has been awarded £177,000 after being diagnosed with an asbestos related disease after the company failed to protect its workers from the risks of asbestos, even at the early stages.
