The danger of Sodium Hydroxide

Once again Employer's liability insurance has come to the rescue for a company in Bradford after an incident where an employee was left blind in one eye.
The chemical specialists, Ciba Specialty Chemicals Ltd, appeared in court this week regarding the incident. The court heard that the employee had been using a corrosive substance, Sodium Hydroxide, when it dripped through a broken pipe onto the workers face.
The workers right eye was left permanently blind after he underwent surgery to correct the damage caused by the Sodium Hydroxide. The court heard that the employee's eyelid had actually turned inwards and the worker was now inable to drive at night.
Ciba Specialty Chemicals Ltd on the other hand were order to pay over £100,000 in compensation to the employee who is now left with seriously deteriorated vision and was forced to enter into retirement early as a result of his injuries.
