Thatch pub burnt to a crisp
Posted on September 07th 2009
A pub in Northolt, Harrow, a centre point for the local residents, has recently been burnt to the ground after the thatched roof caught alight.
Fire fighters battled with the premises for over 6 hours as the thatch reeds fuelled the flames. The proprietor Dave Hament was unclear as to what had started the fire and confirmed that the fire service have launched thorough investigations into the cause of the fire.
Thatch properties are particularly at risk of fires due to the more flammable building materials used in roof construction, however in current times there have less thatch fires than in previous years.
Hament speculated that the fire could have been started by rats who chewed through an electrical wire or by a sunlight reflecting of a mirror, however he was surprised to see the whole roof ablaze in less than twenty minutes.
By the time fire fighters managed to dampen the fire, the entire first floor and roof was destroyed and the ground floor had signs of burning. Hament's liability insurance would have come in handy had anyone been injured in the commotion.
