Shocking charges handed out by HSE
Posted on September 21st 2009
Another warning has been issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after another worker has been seriously injured at work as no safety measures were taken in order to prevent an accident that involved over head power cables.
The worker was working upon a poultry shed roof when he managed to touch some electrical overhead power cables, giving him an 11kV electric shock, and causing him to fall 8ft to the ground. Leaving him with burns all over his body, it was unbelievable that he had survived.
Three companies were fined following the workplace accident, this included two contractors and the workers father, who could have avoided the accident if safety precautions had been carried out, including a thorough risk assessment before work was started on the roof.
Electrical accidents cause 1,000 injuries a year within the workplace and 25 people die; falling from a height also remains at the top of the list as the most common cause of workplace fatalities.
