Retired man dies from asbestos related illness
Posted on October 05th 2009
The family of a man, who died just nine months after retiring due to a work related disease, are disgusted with the system in which they had to seek compensation.
Mr Evans died from Mesothelioma, an asbestos related disease after working for a caravan manufacturer for over 40 years. Back in the 1960's he was required to fit asbestos into the caravans, without any protection, not knowing at the time that it would be harmful later in life.
On retiring Mr Evans was a very fit and healthy man, who in the 40 plus years of working for the company had only had 2 weeks off for a back injury. Within a month of retiring a routine doctor's appointment discovered the disease, nine months later he died; the only thing that was comforting during his unpleasant illness was that his wife would be provided with a large compensation pay out to look after her.
Bailey Caravans, who Mr Evans had worked for were originally a company named FG Bailey Ltd, who would have employed him at the time of the contact with asbestos. FG Bailey Ltd were not required to take out any legal liabilities for the business, therefore no compensation could be acquired, only £17,000 from the Government's Pneumoconiosis Workers Compensation Act Fund; the news has come as a great upset to Mr Evans family who would have received £200,000 if the company had been liable.
2,000 people die each year from asbestos related illnesses.
