Occupational Health Management Tool Launched

The Health and Safety Executive, in a bid to help the construction industry tackle occupational health issues, has launched a web based guidance tool, the Construction Occupational Health Management Essentials (COHME), for construction companies.

2007 saw 0.9 million days lost due to accidents in the construction industry, however 1.8 million were lost due to work related illnesses.

The chief inspector of construction at HSE commented that they want occupational health to move up the agenda for all construction companies. Many of the larger companies can show leadership in influencing the culture change.

Properly managing occupational health is not a new legal requirement however the HSE hope to see good practice being used within the industry.

The COHME tool can be viewed on the HSE Website. It will focus on the management of Occupation Health risks raised by large construction companies, such as dermatitis, respiratory disease, musculoskeletal disorders and asbestos.

It is designed to help the large construction clients, designers and contractors to understand the management of Occupational Health risks in the construction industry and provide them with a single point of access to clear guidance on managing health risks in construction.
