New fines will reach over 10 million pounds
Posted on October 30th 2009
Millions of pounds worth of fines will be handed to businesses if convicted of corporate manslaughter as a result of new sentencing guidelines. The new guidelines state that corporate manslaughter penalties should start at a minimum of £500,000 and will increase drastically for a more serious case. The new proposal has been introduced by the Sentencing Guidelines Council, which they hope the introduction of these new fines will help increase how businesses across the UK approach and improve their health and safety laws at work.
Previous fines would fetch in the region of £100,000 to £200,000 according to Paul Verrico, a solicitor-advocate for Eversheds. He said, "fines into the millions will now be the norm with exceptional fines hitting £10 million plus."
These new fines are expected to be finalised over the next few months and come after the introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter Act of 2008.
