A man who was diagnosed with asbestos related cancer, Mesothelioma was awarded £147,000 compensation in less than 10 weeks.
The 67 year old was exposed to asbestos while working at Laycock Engineering in Sheffield in the clutch and overdrive department. Asbestos is used in the manufacturing process. The man said he has never heard of Mesothelioma before he was diagnosed with the disease and was never made aware that he was working with asbestos during his time at Laycock.
Mesothelioma is a killer cancer; it can lie dormant in people for up to 40 years. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lung, Many sufferers only have months to live after been diagnosed with this awful disease as there is no cure for this disease.
The man, who has three children and five grandchildren, said the compensation would ensure his wife is provided for following his death. He said: "I was in shock when the doctors diagnosed me with Mesothelioma. I did not know anything about this disease and was not expecting them to tell me I had an incurable cancer. Following my diagnoses I found out I was exposed to the asbestos while working at the factory. I had no idea I was dealing with such a dangerous substance. I decided to pursue compensation as I felt that Laycock's should accept responsibility. I also wanted my to make sure my wife was provided for after my death. "
Thompson representative Helen Jones, who dealt with the case, added "Mesothelioma suffers often prefer to have the case concluded quickly during their lifetime as this brings some peace of mind and reassurance that their family will be financially secure after their death."
