Posted on September 25th 2009

Associated British Ports (ABP) have been fined over £340,000 after a worker was killed as a result of health and safety violations. This follows the death of port worker Brian Vince after a truck reversed up a vehicle ramp and crushed the 60 year old grandfather, who was pronounced dead at the scene back in 2007.

ABP pleaded guilty to the charges after admiting to breaching major health and safety measures which could have easily been fixed. Ipswich Crown Court heard how there were no safety measure in force that would stop vehicles reversing up the ramp where it would be hard to spot workers. The prosecuter Mark Watson explained how ABP had inadvertantly ignored the health and safety risks involved and said, "they fell significantly short".

Patricia Vince Brian's wife said, "My wish would obviously be to turn back time and bring my husband Brian back. But knowing that this is not possible, my children and I would like reassurance and comfort that this will never happen again, therefore ensuring that no family has to endure the pain, suffering and loss that we have."
