Machine operator looses tips of fingers
Posted on October 02nd 2009
A plastics factory in County Antrim has been left facing fines after a failure in Health and Safety and training was not provided to employees, with one machine operator loosing the tips of three of his fingers.
The worker at the plastics factory, Schulman Inc. Ltd in Crumlin, had been attempting to clean a probe on a bagging machine that he was operating, however following a lack of training on how to do so he put his fingers in the machine which was moving at the time, taking off the ends of three of them.
The Health and Safety Executive has revealed that the company has been left with fines of £18,000 and £3,800 in costs due to the lack of training and procedure provided to the operators in how to clean specific machines, which could have eventually led to a more serious injury.
