Loyal worker dies in workplace accident
Posted on October 21st 2009
£270,000 has been charged to a large UK food manufacturing company following the death of a worker, Keith Webb.
The accident occurred when the worker and his bulldozer were required to board a ship but due to circumstances the normal entrace for the workers was unusable and so Keith was lifted in by a crane with the bulldozer. The chains which were holding the bulldozer failed, causing him and the vehicle to plummet into the freezing cold waters of the Thames.
Investigations in to the accident discovered that the food manufacturers had breached many health and safety laws, including the use of proper access into the ship and a lack of supervision and management during the time of the fatal accident. As well as being fined £270,000 for their failure to comply with health and safety, they were also ordered to pay £90,000 in costs.
Witnesses to the horrible accident were unable to save their loyal colleague, who was also a much loved father to two children.
