Posted on August 14th 2009

The media often carries the shocking headlines of the latest Health and Safety scandal; this summer played true to form as the festival period spread rampant rumours through the music circuit demanding that festival-goers should wear earplugs to compensate for the loud music.

Employers reacted by standing guard over their liability insurance ready for the next wave of loss of hearing compensation claims from employees and customers who blamed festival organisers and nightclub owners.

However as per normal, this gossip spread with very little truth as the Health and Safety Executive explained. These startling headlines originated from advice issued by the HSE advising employees who constantly work in very loud workplaces such as nightclubs, back stage and festivals should wear earplugs to protect their eardrums from deterioration over time as it is this industry who are most susceptible to the dangers of loud noise.

Unlike the media rumours, festival-goers are still able to hear their favourite bands without the need for earplugs, but the HSE does encourage that loud noise levels over 85 decibels and the vibrating loud sound can be detrimental to the oratory organs, ultimately leaving people deaf.
