Posted on June 20th 2008

The cost of public liability insurance is expected to rise dramatically for sports clubs after a Court of Appeal case held that professional and semi professional clubs could be held liable for their player's actions on the pitch.

The case, the first of its kind to be heard at the Court of Appeal in the UK, was focused on a rugby match between Halifax and Cornish side Redruth, both of the National League Division two, back in October 2005.

The appellant Mr Gravil had sued Mr Carroll and his club Redruth for an attack during the game that left him with a broken eye socket needing facial surgery and six months out of the game with the injury.

However the ruling will not just effect rugby, with professional and semi professional clubs in other sporting disciplines such as football now realising that they can be held liable for injuries caused by their players.

The judgement will only apply to professional or semi professional clubs in the UK where a contract of employment is in place.
