Landlord liability insurance covers live bath taps
Posted on August 19th 2009
After a long hot and stressful day, many of us turn to taking a relaxing bath to wile away are worries. We certainly don't expect that our hot bath will be the last thing we ever do.
In recent headlines a landlord from Portscatho on the Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall has been found liable for the death of a tenant when she failed to supply a safe radiator which turned the bath into a live electrical conductor.
Property owner 83-year-old Hilary Thompson supplied a thirty-year-old radiator, which not only had a castor missing but was also fitted with the wrong 13-amp fuse. The radiator, which was fitted under the bath, lacked earth bonding causing electrical current to flow through the bath taps.
Thirza Whittall was electrocuted when she went to turn on the baths taps. Unfortunately landlord liability insurance will do little to recuperate the loss of life.
