Inadequate asbestos training leads to large fines
Posted on January 23rd 2009
The Health and Safety Executives have been forced to prosecute as electrical contractor who failed to provide its employees with adequate training and information on asbestos.
£3,000 was charged with to the company under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 , along with an additional charge of £2,757 for breaching the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.
The case came about after an employee had to install three heat detectors and cabling in to a commercial kitchen and boiler room. The tiles on the ceiling contained 5-50 of brown asbestos. Although a legal requirement, initial asbestos awareness training was not given to the worker prior to carrying out the work.
Around 40,000 people die a year from asbestos related diseases, so providing employees with adequate awareness and training has become a legal requirement.
