Horrific injury highlights business liability

The value of liability insurance came under focus last week as Peterlees Magistrates fined a company whose employee had a hand completely severed. The horrific injury happened when a 55-year-old worker at Condor Solutions Ltd was cleaning a metal lathe.

After the case Health and Safety Executive Inspector Cain Mitchell said: "This employee suffered an extremely painful and possibly life-changing injury because Conder Solutions Limited failed to take measures to prevent access to dangerous parts of the lathe and to ensure a safe system of work was being used."

The worker's hand was sewn back on by surgeons but to date no feeling has returned. The company was fined £15,000 and also ordered to pay £2,759 in costs after pleading guilty to a health and safety offence. Those outgoings would be met by a suitable liability insurance policy but prevention of accidents like this, the third of its kind in the North-West in the last year, is far more important.
