Health and safety breached by contruction firm
Posted on September 28th 2009
A construction company has been fined with a breach of Health and Safety after a crane driver fell 40 metres inside his cabin whilst it was being winched above a block of flats.
The man suffered severe injuries in the accident, including a broker shoulder blade, broken ribs, damage to his spine and a fractured skull. He also had bruising to most of his body, as well as his lungs from being shaken around in the cab.
The incident happened back in 2007, however the company has only recently been found guilty after being prosecuted by The Health and Safety Executive for failing to check that the equipment was safe to use before starting the work. They also prosecuted the company for a lack of training provided to the crane mans supervisor who failed to ensure that his workers were not put at any risk.
£100,000 in fines have been charged to the company; compensation is still being sought for the worker who can now only walk short distances since the accident due to the agony that he is still in. Since the incident he has not been able to return to work as he has to rely on the comforts of his home.
