HSE launch new campaign aimed at construction
Posted on March 03rd 2010
The Health and Safety Executive are to launch a campaign aimed at cracking down on dangerous construction sites across the UK. The HSE plans to increase awareness of health and safety in the UK construction area to try and prevent accidents and deaths at work. Their push for awareness in the area is because of the construction industries level of deaths and injuries reaching staggering figures. 53 workers died and a further 11,264 where injured in 2008/09 whilst working on a construction site, making this area one of the most dangerous in the UK.
The campaign started on the 1st of March and began to raise awareness in the refurbishment and roofing areas. This is where inspectors will visit sites unannounced where they will then check to make sure that all companies are ensuring and maintaining a high standard of health and safety.
The UK's chief construction inspector for the HSE, Phillip White said: "Each year too many construction workers are needlessly injured or killed while working on site. While some sectors of the industry have made real improvements in recent years, we are really concerned about standards in the refurbishment sector, particularly on small projects."
