Employers manual handling warning
Posted on January 14th 2009
Employers have been warned to make sure their staff are sufficiently trained and have the correct equipments for any manual-handling job they might be required to do.
This warning comes after a man who received a five-figure compensation payout after he severely injured his back twice in the 16 years of working for a sealed air company in Hertfordshire. He slipped on an oily floor whilst lifting a heavy object in 2004 and in February 2005 he suffered injuries to his soft tissues after lifting a 25kg bag.
The accident affect his life, he can't walk, stand up or sit down for too long periods. His life will never be the same.
Manual handling regulations were put in place to help prevent accidents like this. The regulations were enforced to make employers carry out risk assessments, if it was deemed to dangerous the task would need to be redesigned.
