Employer's Liability Tracing Office implements changes
Posted on April 04th 2012
As the UK braces itself for rafts of changes in taxation following the budget, rules governing the legally-required employer's liability insurance are also being updated. From the 1st April, the Employer's Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) requires new information for their database.
All employers are now required to give their insurance provider an employer reference number; however, if you're squirming at the idea of another bureaucratic headache, don't worry. The ruling only applies to employers when they are renewing a current liability insurance policy or taking out a new one.
It is hoped that these changes will give anyone looking to run a trace with the database more reliable results, because each and every employer will have a unique identifying number. This will bring the employer's liability insurance database in line with the motoring one, which requires a vehicle registration number for each car to make it easily searchable.
If you're not sure what your employer reference number is, you will find it on official documentation such as P45s or P60s, as well as some payslips. The only employer's liability insurance customers that won't have this number - and so won't need to supply it - are those where all of the employees earn less than £675 per month.
