Company pleads guilty to fall from height
Posted on July 10th 2009
£10,000 has been awarded to a worker following a fall from a raised forklift truck left him with a broken leg.
The company, who pleaded guilty to breaching the health and safety at work act, along with £10,000 in compensation, have also been ordered to pay £5,800 in costs following their prosecution.
The worker fell 13 feet after attempting to fix a roller door in the factory in which he worked after it had become jammed by balancing on a wooden pallet on top of a forklift. He became unbalanced when the door hit him, causing him to fall.
The workers had all been trained in Health and Safety and were aware of the consequences of falling from a height, however the man-riding basket, which should have been used in the case, was off site at the time.
The faulty roller door, which had been causing problems for at least 10 years has since been replaced and the employers have admitted complete responsibility for causing injury to a valued employee who has been unable to return to work following extensive treatment for his injuries.
