Company fined after employee looses leg
Posted on May 21st 2009
The Burton-Based firm has been fined £12,000 after an employee had to have his leg amputated after an unsupported 1.8-tonne counterbalance weight fell off the back of a forklift truck. The incident occurred at the businesses rented premises at Barn Farm, in Drakelow.
Mr Thompson had to wait while his colleagues used another forklift tuck to remove the weight. He was taken to hospital when doctors were forced to remove his leg below the knee.
Samantha Farrar, prosecuting on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), said Pete Mellor Ltd admitted breaching part of Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 for failing to ensure the safety of people not in their employment. The company also admitted breaching part of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 for failing to make suitable and sufficient risk assessments.
