Company fined after nuclear contamination
Posted on December 07th 2009
A company in Cumbria has been fined £75,000 after pleading guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The incident involved two employees from Sellafield Nuclear Licensed Site inhaling radioactive fumes, after drilling into a concrete floor, which contained traces of the radioactive substance, plutonium.
The superintending nuclear inspector from the HSE said: "The incident highlights the importance of Sellafield following its own arrangements for protecting workers, when undertaking potentially-hazardous work with the risk of exposure to radiation."
The HSE have issued a warning to all contractors across the UK to ensure that they properly evaluate the risks and potential hazards of a site before participating in any work.
