Carpenter wins five-figure sum

Unison has called for a crackdown on workplace hazards after a carpenter was forced to take an early retirement after a fall at work.

The man was working at a NHS hospital when he was injured whilst climbing the staircase, which was badly lit and full of litter and stones. He damaged his right ankle and despite the major surgery he underwent he was forced to retire after suffering from severe pain. Doctors were forced to take away parts of his ankle where they had been too badly damaged and had to perform bone grafts from his hip to repair it along with steel plates and bolts.

Unison were pleased that he has been awarded a five-figure sum for what they considered a preventable fall. Money can never make up for the pain he has suffered at the hands of his employers who failed to check the stairs were clear and correct lighting was used.
