Badly lit staircase causes worker to fall
Posted on February 02nd 2009
A five figure sum has been awarded to a carpenter in compensation after he was forced to retire after a fall at work.
The man, who worked as a carpenter at a hospital was descending a badly lit staircase which was full of rubbish when he slipped on a wrapper. He fell heavily on his ankle seriously damaging it.
His ankle required major surgery and it was thought that he may lose part of his leg, but after a number of steel bolts and plates being inserted in to his ankle and a bone graft from his hip, it looked as though it would all be ok.
When his ankle had repaired itself he was forced to retire after he was left with constant pain.
The accident would not have occurred if the man's employers had ensured that the stairs were free of debris and were well lit.
