Acrobatic Cranes give public and employer liability insurance a severe beating
Posted on July 15th 2009
Monday morning provided another headache for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation; three cranes buckled on a construction site in the city. However, Delhi Metro Rail Corporations employer liability insurance will be taking a hard hit after these two incidents and its rather dubious safety record, as it constructs the New Delhi metro.
The corporation launched this ambitious infrastructure program amongst the frenzied construction preparing the capital for the Commonwealth games in 2010. Tragically 5 people were fatally wounded during the crane escapade following Sunday's bridge collapse, where a further four people were injured.
The cranes were trying to lift a steel girder that elevates the central viaduct but disastrously knocked down several buildings and local slum clusters, hammering Delhi Metro's public liability insurance. Television pictures showed the enormous cranes multi-wheeling in the air before landing vertically; this machinery's acrobatic act followed the bridge's collapse only a day earlier.
In future, Mr Anuj Dayal, Delhi Metro spokesperson, said that 'cranes able to hold a heavier load would be used from now on' and that Monday's crane mishap was due to a 'mechanical fault.' Mr E. Sreedharan resigned as Metro's chief on Sunday feeling morally responsible for the loss of life and the construction failure.
