Accident rate in the UK is too high
Posted on January 06th 2010
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have released new figures that revealed the amount of accidents sustained in Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk during last year. The figures showed that last year alone 1,284 people were seriously injured at work while 5,354 people sustained injuries that caused more than 3 days of absence from work. The HSE also revealed that a total of 7 people were killed as a result of workplace accidents in these counties alone.
As a result of negligence the HSE prosecuted 122 firms in 2009 for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, which resulted in large penalties.
The HSE's regional director for the East, Heather Bryant said: "Behind these statistics are the real life stories of hundreds and thousands of people and families dealing with real hardship, pain and suffering. The New Year is an opportune time to reflect on the number of incidents in the past 12 months, and try and stop the same patterns being repeated. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable.
"We implore employers to exercise leadership in their workplaces - showing commitment, setting example and making sure practical action is taken to manage day-to-day risks. And there is plenty of evidence to show that involving employees with this also improves health and safety performance."
These figures have caused the HSE to issue out warnings and urge all employers across the UK to ensure the safety of their workers and to maintain their health and safety standards in 2010.
