Train driver slips on abandoned rubbish

£6,000 compensation has been awarded to a train driver who tore ligaments in the bottom of his back after he slipped on a pile of discarded rubbish left at the entrance of the train, causing him to fall backwards on to the platform.

The incident occurred when he was entering the train ready to drive back to Leeds, when he stepped on the rubbish, which had been thrown on to the train but not yet cleaned up and slipped backwards landing heavily on his back.

The worker had to spend weeks on crutches and 11 weeks off work, the week after the accident he was due to go on holiday to America but was left in so much pain his holiday was ruined.

The workers trade union commented that the train is their workplace and so should be cleaned adequately in order to provide the workers with a safe working environment.
