Middlesborough fail in liability appeal

Middlesborough FC have failed in their attempt to reduce a liability compensation order made against them by a former soccer starlet.

The claim was made by the commercial law firm Beachcroft representing ex-Manchester United footballer Ben Collett.

Collet was 18 when his career was ended by a Gary Smith tackle last August in a reserve game between the two sides.

Middlesborough have been ordered to pay £4.5 million in liability compensation.

Smith admitted responsibility for the injury but the club claims that the original ruling made by Andrew Pryne QC failed to calculate damages. The Court of Appeal rejected their appeal.
