Factory engineer given £250,000 for career ending back injury

A facilities engineer who seriously injured his back at work has been paid £250,000 damages. He was a member of the Unite union and they supported his claim for compensation.

The company had constructed a new meter house for their factory but had not built safe access to it. The only way to reach it was to climb up a grass verge. On the way back down, he slipped because the grass was wet and fell to the bottom.

After an operation, the facilities engineer was forced to retire and still suffers pain that limits his lifestyle.

His former employer never contested the claim and agreed the £250,000 settlement out of court. They have also since built safer access to the meter house.
